First on tonight’s menu was Steve Guttenberg and Anna’s “Macho Mombo Combo.” Judge Len compared the rough around the edges performance to what happens when he cooks spotted dick. (Uh… not making that one up.) When Anna growled at the judge’s low scores saying it was just Steve’s second dance, Guttenberg chirped up diplomatically, “This show makes the world a better place.”
Cristian de la Fuente did a really quick quick step with Cheryl. Monica Seles made the prophetic move of dancing her awkward mambo with Jonathan to En Vogue’s “You’re Never Gonna Get It.” Then the big-footed voodoo daddy Penn Jillette quickstepped Kym around the floor. His snarky reactions to the judges’ hate for his footwork made her cringe.
Priscilla Presley and Louis delivered another good performance, finishing off their mambo with her Catwoman-like crawl (very Eartha Kitt-ish) across the floor. Not too shabby for a 62-year-old. Have to admit, though, that it’s difficult to not be distracted by those plastic surgery-smoothed facial features that give her a robotic look.
Shannon Elizabeth and partner Derek are very well suited for each other. Her shimmery silver gown flowed beautifully, actually enhancing their lines as they glided across the floor to a quick step.
The judges were quite impressed with Jason Taylor and Edyta’s mambo. Edyta has a knack for turning up the heat in her dances and Taylor aptly fanned the flames. One judge said he had a “great shot at winning.”
Host Tom Bergeron cracked the funniest joke of the evening after uberly-effervescent Marissa Jaret Winokur and her partner Tony completed their quick step. “Marissa makes Steve Guttenberg look sullen.” Adam Carolla’s green mambo with Julianne was fun, or “brilliant” if you’re Len. Tom quipped, “It lit up Mr. Cranky Pants.”
Marlee Matlin and partner Fabian proved that deafness shouldn’t be an excuse for not dancing. She showed a lot of potential in her quick step tonight for making it into the semi-semi or semifinals, with even a shot at the crown. What an impressive story that would be.
Her toughest competition, though, comes from Mario and Kristi Yamaguchi. Mario’s quick step was terrific and Kristi may be unbeatable. Judge Carrie Ann asked her point blank, are you sure you haven’t done this before? That’s a real compliment.
Who will be sent packing: I’d bet on Monica and either Steve or Penn.
